The Trust’s Knit & Natter group recently completed a 24-hour Knitathon to raise money for both the group and a local young girl, called Maggie Barnes, who is in need of a new wheelchair.

Following the event, the Trust’s Debbie Dance commented: “It was 24 hours of non-stop knitting. We had an open event, so from 10 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, it was open to the general public for them to come along.
“They could have a go at knitting a square for a community blanket or knitting a heart for us to use on the Suicide Awareness Day match in September. People came along, had a cup of coffee, a cup of tea and a piece of cake. We had a raffle, tombola, and it was just like an extra-large Knit and Natter to raise some money.
“After 4pm, some of the ladies from my current groups stayed. Some of them did about 12 hours, and then there were eight of us who did the full 24 hours.”
Edwina Pursglove regularly attends Knit & Natter and completed the full 24 hours. She added: “It was amazing because we had so many of us, there were ten of us all together, and it was lovely because we all just kept each other going.
“[The group] makes a lot of difference to us, certainly to me. I’m 72, and I don’t have other things that I can go and do, particularly. It’s lovely to be able to come to a friendly group of ladies who do what I love doing.”
Ann Molyneux attended the 24-hour Knitathon and decided to continue attending the Trust’s Knit & Natter groups. Commenting on her experience, she said: “From stepping through the door, everybody made you so welcome. And you felt as if you’d been coming for a long time.
Debbie also revealed the amount of money raised from the event so far: “We haven’t got a grand total because we’re still collecting in sponsorship money. We raised over £1,500 just on the day.
“On top of that, we’ve also been given some money since. By July 6, we’ll know exactly, as that’s the cut-off date for all the sponsorships to be handed in. We’re hoping to hit the 2000 mark.”
