Speaking about how the day will pan out, Nick said: “It’s aimed at youngsters who are considering the possibility of sports journalism and broadcasting as a career.

“It’s something that I’ve run for a number of years and I’m delighted to say that a number of people who’ve been on the workshop are now working in media jobs and sports media roles, such as working at football clubs and in the mainstream media. It has been a success and it’s something that I enjoy doing.

“I do bits on interview skills, on writing, also commentary. We’ll have a mock commentary session where you look at the build-up to a goal and describe that. And we’ll have a current player coming in for a mock press conference.

“I teach the attendees about interview skills and then we have what is essentially a mini press conference over in the HUB. It’s in the executive box, overlooking the pitch, so it’s a nice environment. The youngsters who’ve been on it have all enjoyed it, I’ve had some fantastic feedback in the past.”

Continuing with how important it is for him to be able to inspire the next generation of journalists, Nick added: “It’s massively important. When you look at the demands of the industry, it’s highly competitive.

“If you’ve got a head start by doing something like this, then it really does bode well. I do get a lot of satisfaction from helping people come through. It’s really rewarding for me personally and something I hope to do for a long time to come.”

Finally, speaking on the chance to interview a current Chesterfield FC player, Nick explained: “That is one of the real highlights of the day.

“Being able to speak to a current player, to interview them, to ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask a footballer. It’s a real thrill for people and I’m grateful to the players who take part in that because it is a highlight of the day.

“We’ve had people like Ritchie Humphreys, Haydn Hollis, Tommy Lee, Liam Mandeville and Jamie Grimes. So we’ve had a number of well-known names that have attended in the past.

“They take part well, they’re used to being interviewed. It’s great for the youngsters to be in that situation where they can put the questions to them and see how a press conference works.”
