A successful ceremony to recognise International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) was held on Tuesday, April 28, in the Chesterfield FC Memorial Garden, located behind the East stand and the HUB.
The event organised by the Trade Union Safety Team, with the support of the Chesterfield and District Trades Union Council, was to remember all who lost their lives in their workplace.
The Memorial Garden and the SMH Group Stadium are on the site of the former Dema Glass factory. East Midlands Asbestos Support Group was part of the ceremony, as hot working sites like the glass factory had issues with asbestos. The effects of working with asbestos are life-limiting for many former workers.
Jerry Hague, TRUST Co-ordinator, said: “IWMD is commemorated throughout the world and has the dual aim of remembering all workers who have died as a result of going to work, as well as fighting for the living. Workers are still suffering the consequences of health and safety hazards from years ago, and work still causes avoidable, tragic deaths and ill health.”
