Eckington Year 7 and 8 girls recently took part in the area finals of the Utilita Girls’ Cup, at Derby Racecourse, representing Chesterfield FC Community Trust.

Speaking about the event, the Trust’s Rob Stevenson said: “The event followed the local round that we ran with secondary schools over the Chesterfield and Bolsover districts, which had around 12 teams take part in the year seven and eight competition, which Eckington School ended up winning.

“They went on to represent the Trust in the Utilita Girls’ Cup area finals, which was hosted by Derby County Community Trust, and took part with schools throughout the Midlands region.

“It’s a great opportunity. I think it showcases the impact that football club charities have had nationally. The Utilita Girls’ Cup is a great event, and it’s something for girls to aspire to, especially with the end goal being at Wembley Stadium.”

Rob went on to talk about the experience for the girls at Eckington School, saying: “Eckington School absolutely loved it and the girls represented the Trust, the club and also their school brilliantly.

“These are girls who take part in grassroots football, take part in sessions with local academies and emerging talent centres. Playing against other schools that have similar ability to them made for a really competitive event.

“The girls came away from the day saying that it was one of the best experiences of their lives. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get through to the next stage, but I think the girls should be very proud of what they’ve been able to do.”

Rain Robinson, of Eckington School, spoke on the day, saying: “Nine players, one badge, and an unforgettable experience. A huge achievement from a group of girls who embody the spirit of the ‘Eckington way’.

“I couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved. The support from Rob throughout the day was brilliant, and the girls appreciated it from the start of the day to the moment we left the competition!”
