Brett & Maria
Chesterfield FC Community Trust’s Alternative Provision programme provides a supportive and flexible learning environment for young people who may not thrive in traditional education settings.
For Brett, this environment has been transformative.
Within the programme, Brett takes part in a range of activities including English, Maths, physical education, and community-based work. The structure of shorter lessons and regular breaks allows him to engage more effectively, while the smaller setting creates a calmer, more supportive atmosphere.
What makes the biggest difference is the ability to be himself. Brett feels comfortable speaking with staff, contributing to sessions, and taking an active role in helping others. This sense of belonging has allowed him to build confidence and develop socially as well as academically.
The programme also offers unique experiences that broaden horizons and inspire ambition. Brett has had opportunities to engage with Chesterfield FC players, including memorable moments that have reinforced his motivation and self-belief.
For his mother, Maria, the change has been significant. She has seen Brett grow from a quiet, uncertain young person into someone who is more confident, engaged, and optimistic about the future.
The support provided by staff, combined with a tailored approach to learning, has created an environment where Brett can succeed. His journey demonstrates the importance of recognising that education is not one-size-fits-all, and that with the right support, every young person can flourish.
